AI Data Fabric

An AI data fabric is a layer that collects signals about AI activity from every connected source, normalizes them onto shared identifiers, and makes a sequence of separate events readable as a single interaction.

Two Senses of the Term

The phrase carries two meanings that point in opposite directions. In data management, a data fabric is an architecture that connects business data across distributed environments so applications and models can consume it, with the AI as the reader. In AI governance, an AI data fabric has AI itself as the subject, collecting records of what people and agents did with AI systems so a security or compliance function can see it.

This entry describes the second sense. The distinction between the two matters because search results mix them freely.

‍

What the Layer Does

Three functions define it. Identifier normalization resolves device, account, token and session references from each source onto one subject. Sequence preservation keeps ordering and timing intact, since many findings depend on what followed what. Provenance retention records which source supplied each element, so a finding can be traced back and challenged by somebody who did not build it.

A product missing any one of the three is a collection of integrations rather than a fabric.

‍

Why AI Activity Needs Its Own Layer

Each signal is ordinary alone. A sign-in succeeds, a connection reaches a domain nobody has blocked, and a paste happens inside a browser. The three together, inside a short window and under one identity, describe regulated material moving into an unmanaged account, and that finding has no home in any of the three systems that observed part of it.

See AI data leakage for what the layer is frequently assembled to detect.

Kovrr’s Implementation

Kovrr’s build of this layer is the AI Interaction Data Fabric, which draws from eight source categories covering network, endpoints, browser, agents and model context protocol servers, cloud observability, model and telemetry streams, identity, and data loss prevention.
