Overprivileged Agent
An overprivileged agent is an AI agent whose credentials and access rights extend further than the work it performs, commonly because it was provisioned with the permissions of the person who deployed it.
Agents Inherit the Access of Whoever Built Them
Most agents reach production carrying a credential that already existed. A platform engineer wires an agent to a ticketing system using their own API token, and the agent now holds everything that engineer holds, including the systems it will never touch. Nobody decided to grant that access. It arrived with the integration, and the deployment worked, so no one went back to narrow it.
Standing Grants Accumulate Faster Than Reviews
An agent that runs continuously holds its permissions continuously. Access granted for a one-time migration stays live for months after the migration finished, and the only record that it exists sits in an identity provider nobody reviews against the agent inventory. Counting those grants before attempting to reduce them is the step most programs skip, and Kovrr's guidance on counting standing grants explains why the count has to come first.
Departed Builders Leave Live Agents Behind
When the engineer who built an agent leaves the organization, offboarding revokes their user account. The service principal the agent runs under often survives, because it does not look like a person in any directory. The agent keeps working, which means nobody notices, and it keeps holding access scoped to a job that ended. Kovrr has priced that exposure in detail under the cost of an orphaned agent identity.
Narrowing Access Requires Knowing What the Agent Uses
Reducing permissions blind breaks agents, which is why teams avoid it. The alternative starts with observation, recording which resources an agent reaches across a normal operating period and scoping its credential to that observed set with room for seasonal work. A maintained AI asset inventory supplies the agent list, and agent permissions and scoping covers the design patterns that keep the narrowed state from drifting back.
