Why the Inventory Matters
Almost every AI governance requirement, whether from the EU AI Act, ISO/IEC 42001, NIST AI RMF, or internal policy, presumes an inventory exists. Without one, an organization cannot demonstrate which systems are subject to which controls, cannot prioritize risk mitigation, and cannot answer basic regulatory questions about AI use.
The inventory is also the operational hub of an AI governance program. New AI systems are added to it during intake and approval. Existing systems are reassessed against it during control reviews. Retired systems are removed from it during decommissioning.
Inventory vs. Discovery
AI asset discovery is how assets get into the inventory. The inventory is the maintained record. Discovery is continuous, because enterprise AI use is continuous. An inventory that is only updated during annual audits is not really an inventory.
