Cyber Insurance

Cyber insurance is an insurance product that covers financial losses arising from cyber events, typically spanning first-party losses (incident response, business interruption, extortion payments) and third-party liability (claims from affected customers or partners).

What Cyber Insurance Actually Covers

Cyber policies vary widely, but standard coverage areas include incident response and forensics costs, notification and credit monitoring, business interruption losses, cyber extortion (including ransomware payments where legal), regulatory fines and penalties where insurable, and third-party liability from data breaches affecting others.

Coverage exclusions matter as much as inclusions. War exclusions, act-of-state exclusions, and specific technology carve-outs can significantly limit recovery in high-loss scenarios.

Cyber Insurance and Quantified Risk

The cyber insurance market has professionalized substantially. Underwriters increasingly ask for detailed quantified analysis before writing policies, particularly at higher limits. Programs that can present modeled loss scenarios, quantified control effectiveness, and defensible exposure figures typically secure better terms than programs that cannot.

The relationship works in both directions. Enterprises use CRQ outputs to determine how much insurance to buy, and insurers use their own quantified models to price and structure coverage.

Insurance and Risk Transfer Decisions

Insurance is one of several risk transfer options. Quantified programs evaluate insurance alongside self-insurance, retention layers, and captive structures, choosing the combination that produces the best coverage economics for the specific loss distribution.
