MCP Gateway

An MCP gateway is a proxy that sits between AI agents and the Model Context Protocol servers they call, applying authentication, authorization, policy and logging at one point in the path.

One Chokepoint in Front of Many Servers

Without a gateway, every agent connects to every Model Context Protocol server it needs, holding its own credentials for each and logging wherever it happens to log. A gateway collapses that into a single path. Agents authenticate once to the gateway, the gateway holds the credentials for downstream servers, and every call crosses one place where something can be recorded or refused.

What a Gateway Is Positioned to Enforce

Credential custody is the first thing, since removing per-agent tokens removes the sprawl of secrets no one can rotate. Tool allowlisting follows, restricting which servers and which individual tools an agent can reach. Argument inspection catches calls carrying regulated data or paths outside an approved scope. Rate limiting and quota control bound what a runaway loop can do before anyone notices. Kovrr covers the control set in detail under MCP gateway security controls.

The Gateway Log Sets the Coverage Baseline

A gateway produces an authoritative record of agent-to-tool traffic for everything routed through it, which makes it the natural denominator for coverage measurement. Agents visible in other inventories but absent from the gateway log are reaching tools some other way. Measuring agent coverage against the gateway log converts a vague sense of completeness into a percentage.

What Still Sits Outside the Path

A gateway governs the calls routed through it and sees nothing else. Agents on developer laptops reaching local servers, browser-based assistants and any connection configured before the gateway existed all bypass it, which is the territory described under MCP security and under shadow MCP servers. Deploying a gateway raises the question of what fraction of traffic it actually carries, and that fraction is rarely the one assumed.
