Mean Time to Respond (MTTR) is the average time between detection of a cyber incident and the completion of defined response actions, serving as an operational indicator of response capability and playbook effectiveness.

What MTTR Actually Measures

MTTR captures how quickly a security team moves from detection to defined response actions: containment, eradication, initial recovery. The specific end-point definition matters. Some programs measure MTTR to containment, others to full recovery, others to a specific playbook milestone. Consistent definition across time is more important than which definition is chosen.

MTTR and Loss Reduction

Faster response typically produces smaller losses. The relationship is not linear, but response speed materially affects how much data an attacker exfiltrates, how far ransomware propagates, and how long business functions remain affected.

Quantified programs model response effectiveness explicitly, with MTTR distributions feeding into severity distributions for modeled scenarios. Investments in response tooling, playbook maturity, and staff training show up in the loss distribution rather than as isolated operational metrics.

MTTR Beyond Averages
