Browser Extension Security

Browser extension security is the practice of governing which browser extensions are installed across an organization, what page content and credentials they can reach, and what they transmit.

An Extension Reads Everything the Page Does

An extension granted access to all sites can read any page the employee opens, including an authenticated banking portal, an internal admin console and a customer record in a CRM. Permissions are approved once at installation, in a dialog most people dismiss, and they persist silently afterward. The privilege level sits closer to an endpoint agent than to an application, with none of the review an endpoint agent receives.

Auto-Update Is the Supply Chain Risk

Extensions update themselves without reinstallation, so an extension reviewed at install time is not the code running next month. Popular extensions are bought by new owners who monetize the installed base, and compromised developer accounts have been used to push data-collecting versions to users who did nothing. An approved list that records a name without pinning a version is recording very little.

Most Enterprise AI Use Now Enters Through This Surface

AI assistants ship as extensions, and employees install them individually. Each one sees page content across the session, which puts the sensitive material of every open tab inside reach of a vendor nobody assessed. Reading that activity requires the same position the extensions themselves occupy, an argument set out under reading AI use from the browser when the network sees nothing.

Control Comes From Policy Plus Position

Enterprise browser management supports allowlisting by extension ID, blocking by permission type and forcing installation of sanctioned tooling. Pairing that with identity signals lets an organization distinguish a corporate tenant from a personal account on the same AI domain, which is covered under identity-based browser controls for AI. Kovrr's own AI security browser extension occupies that position to record and enforce at the moment of composition.
