Why Training Data Is Foundational

Everything a model does traces back to its training data. What Training Data Governance Covers

Training data governance addresses provenance (where the data came from), consent and licensing (whether use of the data is authorized), quality and representation (whether the data supports the intended use case), and integrity (whether the data has been tampered with).

For enterprises using foundation models, most of these questions apply to the model provider rather than the enterprise itself. Training data governance in that context means understanding what the provider has documented about their training data, and using that documentation to assess suitability.

Regulatory Attention to Training Data

The EU AI Act requires providers of general-purpose AI models to publish training data summaries. Sectoral regulators have raised training data questions. Copyright litigation around training data has drawn substantial attention, further increasing the pressure for provenance transparency.

Training Data as an Attack Vector
