AI Runtime Security
AI runtime security is the practice of inspecting and controlling AI systems during execution, evaluating prompts, retrieved content, tool calls and outputs as they occur.
Pre-Deployment Testing Covers a Different Window
Red teaming, evaluation suites and model cards describe how a system behaved under examination before release. Runtime security governs the system in the hours and months after that, when inputs arrive from users and documents nobody reviewed. Both are needed, and one does not stand in for the other, since a model that passed every evaluation still meets adversarial input on its first day in production.
Four Control Points Carry the Work
Input inspection evaluates prompts and retrieved content before the model sees them, catching injection attempts and regulated data on the way in. Tool call authorization sits between the model's decision and its execution, which is where an unsafe action can still be stopped. Output filtering checks generated content for leaked data or unsafe instruction before it reaches a downstream system. Behavioral monitoring watches the sequence of actions across a session for patterns no individual step reveals.
Latency Is the Design Constraint
Every inspection step adds delay to a response a user is waiting on, which pushes teams toward sampling or toward asynchronous checks that detect after the fact. Deciding which actions justify synchronous inspection, and which can be reviewed afterward, is the design decision that determines whether runtime controls survive contact with a product team. Actions that change state or move data are the ones that earn the latency.
Runtime Evidence Feeds Governance
Controls that block are also controls that record, and the record is what an auditor accepts as proof the control operated. Continuous AI monitoring covers the observation layer, while AI guardrails covers the enforcement patterns applied at these same points. Posture systems describe the configuration these controls run inside, which is a separate question from what they caught.
