Human-in-the-Loop
Human-in-the-loop (HITL) is an AI oversight approach in which a human reviews, approves, or intervenes in AI decisions and actions at defined checkpoints before those decisions or actions take effect.
What Human-in-the-Loop Actually Means
Human-in-the-loop is a specific pattern of human oversight. The AI system does most of the work, but at defined decision points, a human must review and approve before the process continues. Common HITL patterns include human approval on agent actions with financial or operational impact, human review of AI-generated content before publication, and human confirmation of AI-recommended decisions in high-stakes contexts.
HITL is different from full manual review of everything an AI does. It is targeted oversight at points where human judgment provides the most risk reduction.
When Human-in-the-Loop Is Required
The EU AI Act requires human oversight for high-risk AI systems, and HITL is one common way to satisfy that requirement. Sectoral regulations often require human review for AI-driven decisions in credit, employment, and healthcare. Enterprise policy typically requires HITL for AI actions with high blast radius.
Human-in-the-Loop vs. Human-on-the-Loop
HITL requires human approval at each defined decision point. Human-on-the-loop (HOTL) puts a human in a supervisory role, monitoring the AI system's operation and intervening when necessary but not approving each action. Which pattern applies depends on the risk profile and operational tempo of the AI system.
